Bated Breath Theatre Company creates unforgettable communal experiences for not only the traditional theatre-going public, but also the larger world of art-lovers and the community at large. The company devises new works in non-traditional venues in order to reimagine theatre as an essential part of the 21st Century and to put the play back in people’s lives. Beyond its original productions, the Hartford-based company is committed to building the next generation of American theatre artists through its rigorous physical theatre training program.
Bated Breath Theatre Company was founded in 2008 as a small, volunteer-run theatre company bringing dynamic theatrical performances to the Greater Hartford area. Their early work ranged from reinterpretations of classic plays to experimental, contemporary performance pieces. They often would create site-specific pieces to create interactive theater experiences that blurred the distinctions between audience, performers and locations. These performances could include puppetry, movement, song and other approaches to create one-of-a-kind experiences for audience members.
Bated Breath is poised to move from a small, mostly volunteer-run organization to one that will galvanize the world of museum programming, education in and out of schools, change people's ideas about what theater is, and train emerging and professional actors in our exciting approach to live theatre.
In 2012, Mara Lieberman took over as Artistic Director, and has moved the focus of the company toward the creation of Interludes, shorter performance pieces devised to be presented in the context of a gallery, museum exhibit or other cultural/public event.
