Many of these African American work songs embedded coded messages in the lyrics that helped guide runaways to freedom. Later, they were popularized by the Fisk University Jubilee Singers and by Marian Anderson's Lincoln Memorial Concert of 1939, helping to catapult the fight for racial justice into the center of American discourse. The Spirituals' legacy continues to strike a chord today. Freedom in 3 Acts Freedom: In 3 Acts was created for the Juneteenth Gala at The Amistad Center for Art & Culture and subsequently performed at The New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas and other sites in New England. The play was honored with a Connecticut League of History Organizations Award. Freedom Deconstructed Freedom Deconstructed was performed as a keynote speech for the New England Museum Association’s annual conference. The performance is currently being revised to include the present struggle to uproot systemic racism and end police brutality against Black, Indigenous, People of Color. For Voyeur, Mara was awarded Best Director by Broadway World’s 2021 Off-Broadway Awards and Time Out named Lieberman a “Future Maker” in “50 Amazing People Changing the World.” Additionally, Lieberman has adapted and directed plays at The New York International Fringe Festival, New Haven Festival of Arts & Ideas, New Georges The Room, and HERE’s American Living Room Festival. She also served as assistant to Lloyd Richards at the National Playwright’s Conference. In March 2025, Mara launched the New York Center for Immersive Theater. She is a proud member of the League of Professional Theatre Women.
